Scars can always be improved! We offer the most advanced and up-to-date treatment options to improve the texture and color of your scar.
Conservative Treatments
- Sun Protection – Sun is known to make scarring worse, so make sure to protect from the sun!
- Scar Massages – Scar massages improve the final appearance of the scar. Wait to start these until instructed by your surgeon.
- Scar Creams - Keeping the scar hydrated with various types of scar creams or plain Vaseline has been shown to improve the final appearance of the scar.
- Time - Scars take about a year to mature and reach their final form, so giving the scar time to heal will also improve the appearance.
Procedural Treatments
- Botox – Botox can be injected immediately after surgery to decrease movement around a scar. This has been shown in recent studies to improve the final appearance of a scar. Not all scar locations can be injected.
- Dermabrasion – Dermabrasion involves “sanding” the surface of the scar to smoothen the appearance.
- Intralesional Kenalog Injection – Intralesional kenalog injection can treat a thickened scar, causing it to flatten out.
- Lasers – Laser therapy can be used to treat redness and texture.
- Microneedling – Microneedling is used to treat depressed or indented scars.
- Subcision – Subcision can also be used to treat depressed or indented scars.
- Surgical Revision – Surgical intervention may be used to deflate a puffy scar, to recreate natural creases, or to remove an unsightly portion of the scar.
